The Ivy Tote – Free Crochet Pattern

photo of ivy tote - free crochet pattern

The Ivy Tote is a great addition to any spring or summer wardrobe. This fresh and eye-catching tote is worked in the round, using the diagonal chevron crochet stitch. By changing colors from cream to green, the effect created is that of a series of trailing ivy strands. If you are interested in learning this technique, I encourage you to give this pattern a try. I have included photos and a video to help you along the way!

This project uses my favorite #6 super bulky yarn – Lion Brand Hometown USA. I love this yarn because it is easy to find in my local stores and it provides an amazing structure with no lining necessary. The handles, which were purchased online (details below), lend a polished look to this project. The free crochet pattern is below, or purchase a print-optimized, ad-free PDF.

Notes:

The Ivy Tote is worked in continuous rounds without turning. Do not join at the end of each round – continue working in a spiral. Use a stitch marker (or paper clip) to mark the beginning of each round. When changing colors, you will simply drop the color not in use to the back of the work, then pick it up when it is needed again.

Instructions:

Round 1:

Use 9.0mm hook. With cream, ch 28, two (2) sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each st across, 3 sc in last st, sc in each st across opposite side ending with a sc in the 1st ch. (56 sts)

Round 2:

Sc in 1st st, two (2) sc in next st, sc in each of the next 25 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in each of the next 26 sts. (59 sts)

Rounds 3-8:

Sc in each st around. Do not fasten off. Change to 10.0 mm hook.

Rounds 9-18:

*With cream sc in each of next 2 sts, changing to green on the last pull through.

With green, working back over the 2 sc’s just made, insert hook back into the first st one round below (marked with a red arrow in the photo below). Yarn over and pull up a long loop, stretching it to the height required for the current round (2 green loops on hook). Working over the next st, insert hook into the next st 2 rounds below (marked with a yellow arrow in the photo below).

Yarn over and pull up another long loop, stretching it to the height required for the current round (3 green loops on hook).

With cream, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops. First long sc2tog made.

Skip unworked st behind long sc2tog just made.**

Repeat from * to ** around.

Below is a video to help you understand how to change colors while working this stitch.

At the end of Round 18, fasten off green. Change back to 9.0 mm hook.

Rounds 19-24:

With cream only, sc in each st around.

Round 25:

Sl st in each st around. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Using a few strands of any cream colored thread and a needle small enough to fit through the pre-punched holes of your purse handles, sew a handle to each side of your crochet tote and enjoy!
