Hello there! I hope you are having a wonderful week. I’m so excited to share a beginner friendly crochet placemat pattern with you today. I am calling this pattern the Simple Seaside Placemat and the name really says it all!
This pattern uses single crochet and chaining to create a beautiful and simple shell design. I used seaside colors to create stripes on the placemat photographed, but this pattern looks lovely worked up in solid colors as well.
The pattern begins with foundation single crochet. If you have not learned this technique yet, now is a great time! Beginning a project with foundation single crochet helps to maintain an even tension, which is especially helpful when making squares or rectangles.
When I was finished with the body of my crochet placemat, I was happy enough with the shape and size of it that I didn’t add a border or block it. A simple pattern indeed! I hope you enjoy!

If I needed to make this a little wider how would I do this? I’m making it in cotton and it seems a little small.
You can increase your hook size or you can increase your starting chain. The pattern repeat is in multiples of 3 + 2. So instead of working 71 FSC, you could work 74 FSC or 77 FSC or 80 FSC, and so on and so forth. Hope this helps!
It does. Thank you
