Textured Gingham Crochet Placemat

I’ve been doing a little refresh to my dining room decor and wanted to make some gingham crochet placemats in a neutral shade. The Textured Gingham Crochet Placemat is worked using the flat tapestry crochet technique, but instead of using only single crochets, it alternates single and double crochets to give a textured effect. Unlike my previous tapestry crochet patterns, however, instead of providing a graph, I will give you row by row instructions. This placemat worked up really quickly, which is a relief since I have three more to make! If you would like to make your own, read on!

Textured Gingham Crochet Placemat

Materials Used:

• 1 skein each – I Love This Cotton in White, Dove and Pewter
• Size J/10 – 6.00 mm crochet hook
• Tapestry needle for weaving in the ends

Abbreviations:

ch(s) = chain(s)
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
st(s) = stitch(es)
sl st = slip stitch
American crochet terms used throughout

Gauge:

3.5″ x 3.5″ = 12 sts (alternating sc’s and dc’s),10 rows

Finished Size Approximately:

20″ wide x 14″ tall (with border)

Notes:

Tapestry crochet is a technique where you work with several colors of yarn across each row to create a graphic design. This pattern uses two colors in each row. At any point, one color will be “in use” while the second color is carried along by working over it.

Dove and pewter are used for the first 5 rows, then dove and white are used in the next 5 rows. The pattern will alternate in the same manner every five rows. You will fasten off the pewter and white when you get to the end of each 5 row section, but you will use the dove continuously throughout the entire project.

Instructions:

Foundation Row:

With dove, ch 61, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. Join pewter by holding the pewter yarn up against your foundation chain so that in the next row you will stitch over it with the dove yarn.

Row 1:

With dove, ch 1 and stitching over pewter, [1 sc in first st, 1 dc in next st] three times. Drop dove behind work and pick up pewter. With pewter and stitching over dove, [1 sc in first st, 1 dc in next st] three times. Continue repeating this pattern across the row until you have 5 sections of dove and 5 sections of pewter.

Row 2:

With pewter, ch 1 and stitching over dove, [1 sc in first st, 1 dc in next st] three times. Drop pewter behind work and pick up dove. With dove and stitching over pewter, [1 sc in first st, 1 dc in next st] three times. Continue repeating this pattern across the row until you have 5 sections of dove and 5 sections of pewter.

Row 3:

With dove, ch 1 and stitching over pewter, [1 sc in first st, 1 dc in next st] three times. Drop dove behind work and pick up pewter. With pewter and stitching over dove, [1 sc in first st, 1 dc in next st] three times. Continue repeating this pattern across the row until you have 5 sections of dove and 5 sections of pewter.

Row 4:

With pewter, ch 1 and stitching over dove, [1 sc in first st, 1 dc in next st] three times. Drop pewter behind work and pick up dove. With dove and stitching over pewter, [1 sc in first st, 1 dc in next st] three times. Continue repeating this pattern across the row until you have 5 sections of dove and 5 sections of pewter.

Row 5:

With dove, ch 1 and stitching over pewter, [1 sc in first st, 1 dc in next st] three times. Drop dove behind work and pick up pewter. With pewter and stitching over dove, [1 sc in first st, 1 dc in next st] three times. Continue repeating this pattern across the row until you have 5 sections of dove and 5 sections of pewter. Fasten off pewter and turn work. Join white by holding the white yarn up against your work so that in the next row you will stitch over it with the dove yarn.

Row 6:

With dove, ch 1 and stitching over white, [1 sc in first st, 1 dc in next st] three times. Drop dove behind work and pick up white. With white and stitching over dove, [1 sc in first st, 1 dc in next st] three times. Continue repeating this pattern across row until you have 5 sections of dove and 5 sections of white.

Row 7:

With white, ch 1 and stitching over dove, [1 sc in first st, 1 dc in next st] three times. Drop white behind work and pick up dove. With dove and stitching over white, [1 sc in first st, 1 dc in next st] three times. Continue repeating this pattern across row until you have 5 sections of dove and 5 sections of white.

Row 8:

With dove, ch 1 and stitching over white, [1 sc in first st, 1 dc in next st] three times. Drop dove behind work and pick up white. With white and stitching over dove, [1 sc in first st, 1 dc in next st] three times. Continue repeating this pattern across row until you have 5 sections of dove and 5 sections of white.

Row 9:

With white, ch 1 and stitching over dove, [1 sc in first st, 1 dc in next st] three times. Drop white behind work and pick up dove. With dove and stitching over white, [1 sc in first st, 1 dc in next st] three times. Continue repeating this pattern across row until you have 5 sections of dove and 5 sections of white.

Row 10:

With dove, ch 1 and stitching over white, [1 sc in first st, 1 dc in next st] three times. Drop dove behind work and pick up white. With white and stitching over dove, [1 sc in first st, 1 dc in next st] three times. Continue repeating this pattern across row until you have 5 sections of dove and 5 sections of white. Fasten off white and turn work. Join pewter by holding the pewter yarn up against your work so that in the next row you will stitch over it with the dove yarn.

Rows 11 – 15:

Repeat rows 1 – 5.

Rows 16 – 20:

Repeat rows 6-10.

Rows 21 – 25:

Repeat rows 1-5.

Rows 26 – 30:

Repeat rows 6-10.

Rows 31 – 35:

Repeat rows 1-5.

Fasten off pewter and dove and weave in all ends.

For the Border:

Round 1:

Attach dove in top right corner. Ch 3 (counts as dc) and dc in same st. Work around each edge of the placemat, placing 1 dc in every st and 3dc’s in each corner. When you reach the corner where you first began, add 1 dc (for a total of 3dc’s in this corner) and sl st to the third ch of the beginning ch-3.

Round 2:

Ch 3 (counts as dc) and place another 4 dc’s in the same stitch, *skip 1 st, 1dc in next st, skip 1 st, 5 dc in next stitch; repeat from * around and slip st to beginning ch-3. (You may have to adjust your repeat slightly once you near a corner in order to put a shell in each corner stitch, which is my preference).

Fasten off and weave in ends. Enjoy!
